Region: Shawnee Hills, Illinois
Alto Vineyards was started by the Renzaglia family in 1982 with the first plantings in Southern Illinois, began selling their wines in Illinois in 1988, and today has won over 500 national and international awards. I’ve tried many of their wines and the Chambourcin is my favorite. It is a dry, medium to full-bodied wine with aromas and flavors of dark red fruits. The grapes are selected from various vineyards in Southern Illinois including Alto’s own. Aged in new and one to two year American Oak barrels for one year. This wine has a lower alcohol of 12% for a bolder red wine. This wine works well for me all by itself, but also pairs well with steak and red meats.
